A BIT MORE ON MEASURE 49 (aka the Measure 37 Fix):
–Measure 49, a referral measure – which will appear on the November 6, 2007 ballot is a balanced approach to solving the mess left by Measure 37.
–The M49 referral protects Oregon ’s farmland, areas with a limited water supply, forests and the rights of families to build homes on their own property.
–It fixes flaws in the original Measure 37 that allow large housing subdivisions, big-box stores and strip malls where they don’t belong.
–M49 referral restores balance by helping small property owners and preserving Oregon’s special quality of life for future generations.
Governor’s in this fight
(Eugene Register-Guard, Editorial, July 16)
…It is clear that Democratic governor has no intention of giving Measure 37 another free pass. On Thursday, he played the leading role in the kick-off for a campaign for a November ballot measure that would significantly restrict rural development allowed under Measure 37. Former Govs. John Kitzhaber and Barbara Roberts, both Democrats, and Vic Atiyeh, a Republican, will be joining him in the pivotal months to come.
This canvass is a great way to get in touch with your neighbors and talk to them about how M49 will impact our beautiful county forever.
See you THIS Saturday, Aug. 4th!

Should we sell $20 billion in arms to any country? The US has a plan to sell $20 billion in arms to saudi arabia. What will this do? This will be used to buy guns, bullets, bombs that will be used to intimidate, maim, and kill. This is the typical knee-jerk escalation that views solving the problems of terrorism as killing more terrorists. The collateral damage is a stable society. What gets left behind is all the direct and indirect effects of putting $20 billion of arms in the middle east.
The weapons that are constantly being used in all these areas came from somewhere. We need to add no more. For $20 billion, we could add infrastructure for roads, schools, water for those that are the worst off. The best way to combat terrorism is to strengthen those people who have the least care of their futures and their country.

In a first of its kind online format, CNN and YouTube sponsored the recent Democratic debate.
Many Lane Bus members gathered at the Bus office to watch the event take place. Local news from KVAL was there to capture it for a late night news story! This presidential race has already proven that the future of politics and political campaigns will have to engage the online audience to succeed.
Good thing LaneBus.org will be there to contribute along the way! (except we can’t talk about federal elections, except I kind of just did, but not really, so we’re good.)

Way to go Quinn on securing the interview…woot woot!

It is really hard to get yourself kicked out of a Bus Project Gala…Giving Ric a camera and a backstage bracelet is probably one good way! Check out this documentary of the Wheelies. I’m just glad Ric was not on the return trip on the bus to catch some of those uncensored and wacky moments!
Lanebus.org does not condone or support some of the language or behavior going on in the last minute of this video!

CNN’s latest is on a “gas price survey maven.” And her main points are that “Rhetoric about consuming less, demanding less” is faulty and “Global warming a ‘boogeyman’ affecting oil politics in Washington.”
I wonder if there are any businesses that would make money if people consumed and demanded more gas before dinner and laughed at global warming after. Is it coincidental that these are all the standard talking points? Pay no attention to the environment behind the curtain, and use more gas.

Another 3884 words wasted. In the ongoing pseudo-saga of CNN v Michael Moore, we are learning more about modern day journalism than about the health care system. Moore presents a portrait of the richest nation in the world with a worse than second-rate health care system that is mediocre to the people that have it and non-existent for the tens of millions that don’t have it.
Instead of pondering why the national media have rarely gone in depth and uncovered the same rock-bottom outcomes at sky-high prices — they spend their words pulling little contrasting tidbits to the points Moore raises. These tidbits don’t contradict Moore’s points, but they do perform the same “balance” act that Fox uses to water down the main and objective point.
A journalistic principle that has nearly vanished is that spending time/words on a story should be proportional to that topic’s effect on our society and people.
Dissecting a failed health care system, based on bang-for-buck or outcomes, should constitute a lions share of journalistic time and energy. What are the problems? How have countries with great outcomes for low prices succeeded and failed? Why did this topic get attention through a blockbuster movie instead of through the normal channels of our media system? This CNN v Moore controversy is only a controversy by the amount of time wasted on this side-show distraction and not the core issue that is affecting millions.

A report from CNN shows that the
Midwest is the most likely to volunteer.
Midwesterners are more likely to volunteer their time than are people elsewhere in the United States, according to a government study being released Monday. The highest rates were in the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, metropolitan area, where more than four in 10 adults volunteered.
I know that most everyone reading this is already doing their part, but come on Northwest, we can do better!!
